Dr. Michael Hicks
Dr. Michael Hicks is a specialist anaesthetist who moved from Sydney to study Medicine at the University of Newcastle, graduating with Distinction. He enjoyed his time in Newcastle so much he decided to stay in the region. His initial postgraduate training focused on critical care medicine, with terms in emergency medicine and anaesthesia. He went on to complete his specialist training in Anaesthesia in the local region. During his time at John Hunter Hospital, he benefited from seeing the wide variety of presentations that the hospital receives, providing anaesthesia across a broad range of surgical procedures. Additionally, the very busy emergency department affords valuable experience with managing major trauma.
Dr. Hicks also undertook training in retrieval medicine, gaining valuable experience in the transport of critically ill patients throughout northern NSW, by both road and helicopter. He then completed a fellowship year at the HNE Medical Simulation Centre.
Dr. Hicks now works as a Visiting Medical Officer across a number of hospitals in the Newcastle region and is a Conjoint Fellow, with the School of Medicine and Public Health, Newcastle University.
In his practice, Dr. Hicks maintains his skills across a broad range of anaesthesia sub specialties, with particular interest in regional anaesthesia, major general surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, maxillofacial, orthopaedic and ENT surgery. He is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and complies with all continuing professional development requirements of the college. In his spare time you can most likely find him on a bike somewhere or drinking coffee… sometimes combining the two.
