Dr. Joel Parrey

Dr. Joel Parrey is a specialist anaesthetist who practices in the Newcastle region. He grew up in Lismore on the north coast of NSW before completing medical training through the Universities of New England (Armidale) and Newcastle. Following graduation, he worked as a junior doctor in the Hunter New England area, gaining experience in a range of medical specialties.

Dr. Parrey pursued a career in anaesthetics through working as a critical care resident at the John Hunter and Calvary Mater Hospitals in both Intensive Care and Anaesthetics. During this time, he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Medicine through the University of Sydney. Following this, Dr. Parrey was accepted into the anaesthetic training program at the John Hunter Hospital.

His training time was spent working in both Newcastle and Maitland as well as regional areas such as Lismore, gaining valuable experience in all areas of anaesthesia. Once completed, Dr. Parrey undertook a 12 month fellowship in regional anaesthesia, further specialising in providing peri-operative analgesia and anaesthesia for patients using nerve blocks.

As well as practicing in private hospitals, Dr. Parrey also holds a staff specialist position at John Hunter and Belmont Hospitals which allows him to maintain his skills and experience across a broad range of anaesthetic sub-specialties whilst being involved in the education of medical students and registrars. His clinical interests include orthopaedics, neurosurgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, ophthalmology and trauma surgery.

In his spare time, Dr. Parrey has been involved in a number of overseas ophthalmic aid trips, providing anaesthesia to the local population for sight-restoring surgery. He also plays soccer and loves to travel and hike with his wife.
